Job Summary

The Department of Internal Affairs is seeking a Director Water Services in Wellington. This senior role leads the Water Services Reform programme with a salary range of NZ$177,733 – NZ$221,179.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide strategic leadership for the Water Services Reform programme, ensuring alignment with national infrastructure goals.
• Oversee the design, funding and delivery of water service projects across local authorities.
• Build and maintain partnerships with iwi, Māori, regulators, government agencies and community groups.
• Drive sustainability and resilience outcomes for New Zealand’s water infrastructure.
• Manage programme budgets, performance metrics and risk registers.
• Represent the department in high‑level stakeholder forums and provide expert advice to senior decision‑makers.

Essential Requirements

• Relevant tertiary qualification in engineering, environmental science, public policy or a related field.
• Minimum 10 years’ experience in water services, infrastructure delivery or large‑scale public‑sector programmes.
• Proven leadership experience managing multidisciplinary teams and multi‑million dollar budgets.
• Strong understanding of New Zealand water legislation, regulatory frameworks and iwi partnership processes.
• Excellent communication, negotiation and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Ability to travel across the North Island as required.
