About This Position

Key Responsibilities
- Manage and mentor a team of community reporters, setting daily priorities and editorial direction.
- Oversee coverage of city hall, suburban developments, neighborhood issues, and public‑safety beats.
- Guide reporters in breaking exclusive stories, building deep sources, and producing explanatory and investigative pieces.

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, or related field.

- Proven track record of leading a newsroom team and producing award‑winning investigative work.
- Strong knowledge of Des Moines municipal government, suburbs, and public‑safety issues.
- Excellent editorial judgment, writing, and AP style proficiency.
- Ability to mentor reporters, foster source development, and meet tight deadlines.
