About This Position
Job Summary
The Library of Congress is seeking a detail‑oriented Accountant to join its Financial Reports Division in Washington, D.C. This non‑supervisory, bargaining‑unit role supports the Financial Services Directorate under the Chief Operating Officer.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare, review, and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with federal accounting standards.
- Maintain general ledger entries, reconcile accounts, and ensure accurate posting of transactions.
- Assist with budget formulation, monitoring, and variance analysis for library programs and operations.
- Coordinate audit activities, provide documentation, and respond to internal and external audit inquiries.
- Generate financial reports for senior leadership, highlighting key performance indicators and fiscal trends.
- Support the preparation of financial data for congressional reporting and public disclosures.
- Collaborate with other finance teams to improve processes, implement controls, and ensure compliance with the Treasury’s Financial Management Improvement Act (FMIA).
Qualifications & Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or equivalent certification preferred.
- 3+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in a government or large‑scale non‑profit environment.
- Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and federal financial regulations.
- Proficiency with accounting software (e.g., SAP, Oracle) and advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and written communication abilities.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance as required.
Compensation & Benefits
Salary range: $71,000 – $92,000 per year, reflecting Washington, D.C. locality pay adjustments. The position does not include relocation assistance.
