About This Position
Job Summary
The State of Florida is seeking an Accountant III to join the Department of Education in Tallahassee, Leon County. This full‑time Career Service position offers a salary of $41,471.15 per year.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare, analyze, and reconcile financial statements and reports for the Department of Education.
- Maintain accurate general ledger entries and ensure compliance with state accounting standards.
- Process month‑end, quarter‑end, and year‑end close activities, including journal entries and account reconciliations.
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis to support fiscal planning.
- Coordinate audits and respond to auditor inquiries, providing necessary documentation and explanations.
- Support the Financial Payments Section by reviewing and authorizing disbursements, vouchers, and payroll transactions.
- Implement internal controls and recommend process improvements to increase efficiency and accuracy.
- Prepare ad‑hoc financial reports and presentations for senior management.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Three to five years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in a governmental or public sector environment.
- Knowledge of state accounting regulations, GAAP, and public sector budgeting.
- Proficiency with accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to obtain and maintain any required state certifications or clearances.
