Artificial Intelligence Engineer Job in San Francisco | Nexus AI Career

We are seeking a visionary Artificial Intelligence Engineer to pioneer the next generation of intelligent systems at Nexus AI. In this core role, you will transform ambitious research into robust, scalable production solutions that directly impact millions of users. This is a rare opportunity to work on the bleeding edge of generative AI and large-scale machine learning infrastructure.

About the Role & Our Mission

Nexus AI is on a mission to democratize intelligent automation. As an AI Engineer, you will be embedded within our Product Engineering team, bridging the gap between cutting-edge academic research and reliable, high-performance software. You will own the full ML lifecycle—from data pipeline design and model experimentation to deployment, monitoring, and continuous improvement in a cloud-native environment. Your work will power our flagship analytics platform and new AI-driven product lines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, train, and optimize deep learning models for NLP (LLMs, transformers) and computer vision tasks.
  • Build and maintain scalable data pipelines and model serving infrastructure using MLOps best practices.
  • Collaborate with product managers, data scientists, and backend engineers to integrate AI capabilities seamlessly.
  • Conduct rigorous A/B testing and performance analysis to validate model efficacy and business impact.
  • Stay ahead of the curve, rapidly prototyping and integrating new AI techniques and open-source frameworks.

Requirements

Must-Have Qualifications

  • BS/MS/PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Statistics, or a related quantitative field.
  • 4+ years of hands-on experience building and deploying production ML systems.
  • Expert proficiency in Python and core ML libraries (TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn, JAX).
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals: data structures, algorithms, system design, and clean code.
  • Proven experience with cloud platforms (AWS SageMaker, GCP Vertex AI, Azure ML) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Deep understanding of neural network architectures, training paradigms, and evaluation metrics.

Nice-to-Have Skills

  • Experience with Large Language Models (LLMs), prompt engineering, and fine-tuning (e.g., Llama, GPT).
  • Background in distributed training, model optimization, and inference acceleration.
  • Familiarity with streaming data frameworks (Apache Kafka, Spark) and data warehousing.
  • Contributions to open-source ML projects or publications at top-tier conferences (NeurIPS, ICML, CVPR).

Compensation & Benefits

Salary Range: $150,000 – $220,000 USD/year, commensurate with experience and impact. This role also includes a significant equity package in Nexus AI, ensuring you share in our success.

We believe in total rewards that support your whole life:

  • Comprehensive Health: 100% employer-paid medical, dental, and vision for you and dependents.
  • Flexibility First: Hybrid model in our modern SF Mission District office with 3 days/week in-office. Generous remote work policy for focused weeks.
  • Growth Unlimited: $5,000 annual learning & development stipend, conference budgets, and dedicated time for innovation projects.
  • Rest & Recharge: Unlimited PTO, 12 company holidays, and a 4-week sabbatical after 5 years.
  • Tech & Tools: Top-of-the-line equipment (laptop, monitors, ergonomic setup) and any software you need.
  • Culture: A supportive, non-ego-driven team that values psychological safety, open debate, and building something meaningful.
