We are not just building algorithms; we are architecting the fundamental principles of next-generation artificial intelligence. As an Artificial Intelligence Researcher at our San Francisco lab, you will move beyond incremental improvements to tackle the core scientific challenges on the path to robust, general-purpose AI. This is a rare opportunity for a visionary thinker to work with unprecedented computational resources and a world-class team on problems that will define the next century.

About the Role

In this senior research position, you will lead high-impact projects exploring the frontiers of machine learning, from novel neural architectures and self-supervised learning to AI safety and alignment. Your work will directly contribute to our core platform, with a focus on creating models that learn, reason, and adapt with minimal human supervision. You will have the autonomy to pursue bold research questions, supported by a dedicated engineering team to implement and scale your ideas.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and evaluate novel AI algorithms and theoretical frameworks.
  • Conduct original research that pushes the boundaries of what is possible in deep learning, reinforcement learning, or related fields.
  • Publish findings in top-tier conferences (NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR) and contribute to the open-source community.
  • Collaborate closely with fellow researchers, engineers, and product teams to translate theoretical advances into practical capabilities.
  • Mentor junior researchers and help shape the long-term research roadmap for the organization.
  • Engage with the global AI research community through collaborations and peer review.

Requirements

Must-Have Qualifications

  • PhD in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, or a related quantitative field, OR equivalent proven research experience.
  • Track record of first-author publications at premier AI/ML conferences (e.g., NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, COLT, AAAI).
  • Deep expertise in modern machine learning (e.g., transformers, diffusion models, LLM theory, RLHF, or probabilistic ML).
  • Exceptional mathematical and statistical reasoning skills.
  • Proficiency in Python and major ML frameworks (PyTorch, JAX, TensorFlow).
  • A relentless drive to solve open-ended, poorly-defined research problems.

Nice-to-Have Attributes

  • Experience with large-scale distributed training and infrastructure optimization.
  • Background in AI safety, interpretability, or mechanistic interpretability.
  • Familiarity with multi-modal learning, robotics, or cognitive science.
  • Prior work in a top-tier industry research lab or academic postdoc.
  • Strong software engineering practices and ability to produce production-quality code.

Estimated Salary Range: $150,000 – $220,000 USD/year, plus significant equity compensation and annual bonus. Final offer is calibrated based on experience, expertise, and market data for similar roles in the San Francisco Bay Area.

What We Offer

We believe groundbreaking research requires an environment of total intellectual freedom and support. We are committed to building the best place in the world to do AI science.

  • Unparalleled Resources: Access to one of the world’s largest GPU/TPU clusters, dedicated compute for your projects, and a generous research budget.
  • Impact & Visibility: Your work will be deployed at scale and will directly shape our product and the field. We actively support publication and open-sourcing.
  • World-Class Team: Collaborate with renowned researchers, engineers, and scientists. Daily opportunities for deep technical discourse.
  • Growth & Autonomy: Define your own research agenda. We provide the support and trust you need to pursue ambitious, long-term goals.
  • Comprehensive Benefits: Premium healthcare (medical, dental, vision) for you and your family, 401(k) match, flexible PTO, and a generous parental leave policy.
  • San Francisco HQ: A vibrant, centrally-located office designed for collaboration and focus, with catered lunches, snacks, and an environment built for innovation.
  • Relocation Assistance: Full support for candidates moving to the San Francisco Bay Area.

Our Culture & Mission

We are a mission-driven organization focused on ensuring artificial general intelligence (AGI) benefits all of humanity. Our culture is built on honesty, collaboration, and a deep commitment to scientific rigor. We reject the “move fast and break things” mentality; instead, we value careful experimentation, intellectual honesty, and long-term thinking. We are looking for individuals who are not just technically brilliant but are also thoughtful about the broader implications of their work.

If you are driven by a desire to understand the deepest principles of intelligence and want to contribute to one of the most important technological endeavors of our time, we want to hear from you. This is more than a job; it’s a calling for the right researcher.
