Associate Attorney

Valley Defenders is seeking a full‑time Associate Attorney in Bellevue, King County, Washington to represent indigent clients in South King and North Pierce County municipal courts.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide compassionate criminal defense for low‑income clients facing diverse barriers such as substance abuse, housing instability, and mental health challenges.
• Conduct client interviews, investigations, and legal research; draft motions, pleadings, and briefs.
• Appear in municipal court hearings, negotiate plea agreements, and advocate at sentencing.
• Collaborate with social service agencies, public defenders, and court-appointed counselors to secure supportive resources for clients.
• Maintain accurate case files, billing records, and compliance with court deadlines.

Required Qualifications

• Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and active Washington State Bar membership.
• 1–3 years of criminal or indigent defense experience preferred; recent graduates with strong advocacy skills are encouraged to apply.
• Demonstrated ability to work sensitively with clients from varied cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
• Excellent oral and written communication, negotiation, and courtroom advocacy skills.
